Indiscriminate Fox culling is pointless.
Most EU countries banned Fox Hunting, with packs of Dogs, a long time ago. It has been banned in Germany longer than any other EU country, so they have had much longer to study how the Ban actually affects Fox numbers.
The Pro Hunting lobby would have you believe that Fox numbers will explode, but the evidence does not support this theory. Pro Hunters have no facts or evidence on which to base their theory, so they just guess. Instead, they should study the actual scientific facts of the matter, gained from years of study.
Having read the results of these many years of detailed study on this subject from Germany, which banned Fox Hunting way back in 1934, I am firmly convinced that the widespread culling of Foxes is a pretty pointless exercise. Unless you have a specific Fox which is actually causing problems, the evidence would indicate that you should leave them alone. There is certainly no excuse for the barbaric practice of Hunting & Killing of Foxes, or Irish Hare or Deer with packs of Dogs, today in Northern Ireland.
N.B. ‘’Hunting live quarry with hounds has been illegal in Germany since a ban was enacted in 1934. Data since that time, and comparisons with other regions, indicate that fox populations generally regulate themselves and do not increase uncontrollably when hunting with dogs (or even general culling) is stopped.
Scientific studies and observations from areas where fox hunting has ceased suggest:''
''Self-Regulation: Fox populations tend to regulate themselves based on factors like food availability, disease, and social structures (e.g., only a dominant pair breeds in a territory).''
''Ineffectiveness of Culling: Intense culling or hunting often has little long-term effect on the overall population. When dominant individuals are removed, the social hierarchy breaks down, which can actually lead to more foxes breeding in the short term, and empty territories are quickly reoccupied by foxes from neighbouring areas.’’
